Records of Archie Eugene Crosby in his 'Smart' family compendium: There were likely several more unknown children by the marriage of John and Nancy. Edgar Smart claims there were 12 boys and 1 girl in this family. John Smart was a sailor in his working years. The 1860 census indicated he was blind (not blind, but a pauper), and the 1880 census also indicated he was a blind (and a pauper), 80 year year old resident of Swanville, ME. The 1860 census indicated he was blind (not blind, but a pauper), and the 1880 census also indicated he was a blind (and a pauper), 80 year year old resident of Swanville, ME. Daniel, Henry, Charles, Thomas and George were all soldiers in the American Civil War. Henry and Charles moved to Wisconsin. Around 1860, or perhaps before that date (before 1850), the family was divided among his neighbors and relatives to raise the best they could. His wife Nancy worked as long as she could and finished her days in the families of her sons. A daughter of Rev. Joseph A. Smart (a son of John and Nancy) tells that John was drowned in the Penobscot River when he went to 'see' the drive on the river at Lincoln. Being blind, he somehow fell into the river and drowned, and was buried at Lincoln. From the letters of Edgar S. Smart: Shortly after 1880 we find he went to visit his brother Joshua Smart who lived in Lincoln, Maine. While at Lincoln he fell into the Penobscot River, which flows through the village, and was drowned. In a cemetery lot owned by Joshua Smart we find a J. Smart buried. There is no marker on his grave but the town records tells us it is J. Smart. Descendants of Joshua Smart tell me that J. Smart was their father's brother and that they know he was drowned in the river and buried in that lot owned by their grandfather Joshua. This would be the Joshua Smart born Jan. 10, 1816. He lived at Lincoln for a time and his first children Isaac and Isabel (twins) were born in Lincoln, ME. The daughter Isabel died soon after birth so they purchased the cemetery lot. Isabel and J. Smart are all that are buried there as the family later moved to another town. Not much of a record on John Smart but the best I have and I think the story is correct.
