Description	:	John Smith, son of Garland Smith and Mary Brown, born February 1772 in Barrington NH. He married Sarah Ann Clark, the daughter of Remembrance Clark and Sarah Bridges on September 01, 1803 in Durham NH. They had six children: David B, Garland, Remembrance Clark, John, Mary and Abraham Clark. After the death of his first wife, John Smith married Lucy Brown on February 16, 1815 in Nottingham, NH. John built his home (before 1830) just up the road from his father, Garland Smith, on what is now Old Settlers road in Barrington, NH. Census records; John Smith is in Barrington, NH in 1830, 1840 & 1850 (no 1820 census record for Barrington, NH). Journal of Enoch Hayes Place: pg. 1098-1099 On Sunday, April 10, 1853 John Smith gave a relative of his, Mr. Nathaniel Roberts, a ride home from a meeting at the F. W. Baptist Meeting house in Barrington. While leaving Mr. Roberts he was thrown from his wagon. He was thought to be dead, but soon regained consciousness. The fall fractured one of his shoulders and fatally injured his lungs. His wife and some of his children, who were at home, about 6 miles away, were soon with him. He was conscious of his situation, until his death 9 hours later. He was 81 years and 2 months of age. John was a tall and heavy man, he had the reputation of being one of the best farmers in Barrington for many years. He was survived by a wife (Lucy Brown Smith), eleven children (listed above), 1 Brother (Ebenezer), 3 Sisters (Lydia Pearey, Mary Brown & Hannah Seward), and left some $6000,00 for his heirs. John Smith's funeral was held on Wed. April 13, 1853 in Barrington (Canaan). Journal of Enoch Hayes Place: pg. 499 John was baptized and united with the 3rd church in Barrington on November 12, 1838. Strafford County Probate Will written December 21, 1848 and proven in Farmington NH: Vol 65, pg. 365-369, names his wife Lucy, his eleven children and his grandson John G Smith (son of David B Smith and Anna M Pearey). He divided his real estate equally between two of his sons. His homestead to David B Smith and the house that (his father) Garland Smith built to Abraham Clark Smith. Census records; John Smith is in Barrington, NH in 1830, 1840 & 1850 (no 1820 census record for Barrington, NH). His grave is marked with a fieldstone only.
