On last Friday afternoon, John Snedden, Sr., one of the few remaining pioneers of Peoples Township passed peacefully away at his home. He had been a suffer from asthma for a number of years, and this, with the infirmities of age was the demise of his death. The deceased was a prominent farmer and cattle feeder, but had not been active for a number of years, having turned the business over to his sons. BORN IN SCOTLAND John Snedden, was born in Clackamannan shire, Scotland, January 23, 1840, and died at his home in Peoples Township, Boone County, Iowa, June 8, 1923, at the age of 83 years, 4 months and 15 days. In 1863 he was united in marriage to Miss Jenet Fyfe of his home neighborhood in Scotland. With his family he embarked for America in February 1868, locating first in Moingona and the following year moved to Des Moines, where he lived for two years; from Des Moines he went to Oskaloosa, lived there for a year, and in the spring of 1872 moved on to a farm he had purchased in Peoples Township, where he spent the remainder of his life. His early life was spent in the occupation of mining. While engaged in this work he contracted what is known as miners asthma, which remained with him through life. VISITED IN SCOTLAND In the summer of 1901, Mr. Snedden, visited his native land, spending several months among relatives there and visiting the scenes of his childhood days. Nearly forty years ago the subject of this sketch was converted and united with the Peoples Baptist Church and remained true to the faith to the end. While his health permitted he was a regular and faithful attending at church services. On every Sunday morning, rain or shine, before automobiles came into use, Mr. Snedden and his family, seated in a spring wagon, could be seen going to church. He always sat in the same pew and took a deep interest in spiritual things. During the last few years of his life when his enfeebled condition prevented him from enjoying this privilege, his faith never wavered and he often spoke of "an house not built with hand, eternal in the heavens" and prayed that God might hasten his entrance to that home.
