John was born to Kay & Amy (Mundell) Snook on the family farm near Cambria on February 6, 1931. John attended McMains Country School, Derby School and graduated from Cambria High School in 1949 as the class valedictorian. He proudly served his country during the Korean War from 1951-1953 as Company Clerk in the Signal Battalion of the United States Army. During his service he received the Korean Service Medal with bronze stars, United Nations Service Medal, and a Combat Infantry Badge. In 2001 John received a special honor from the Korean Nation in a ceremony in Des Moines, Iowa. Upon his return from service, he joined his brothers with the farming operation and together they formed Snook Brothers Farm- focusing on grain and Angus cattle. In later years he enjoyed exploring his interest in antiques and collecting treasures. Service to his country and community was very important to John. He was a member of the American Legion, Wayne County Genealogical Society and served as an officer of the Wayne County Angus Association for several years. John was an elected trustee for Washington Township for more than 30 years. John had a love of learning and sharing his knowledge. He spent countless hours doing research on local history and was a contributor to several historical publications. John was also widely known as an expert on many other topics, such as writing poetry, baking and politics. John enjoyed people and was always available for good conversation and a cup of coffee. He had a wide variety of friends. He would help whomever he could, often those who were downtrodden. In his later years he very much appreciated people who took time to visit him, care for him, and listen to his stories, especially Damon Stubbe, old friends, and the many care providers. John’s nieces and their families remember fondly his love of animals, sense of humor and willingness to share his expertise. He was always delighted to hear about their latest adventures with their quirky children and dogs. Survivors include his brother, Francis Snook (Beverly), nieces: Kathy Snook-Storm (Dennis), Jennifer Snook-Hall (Kevin), Megan Snook-Lautner (Travis), Ashley Snook-Downs (Chris), sister-in-law, Virginia Snook, great nephews; Token Hall, Traejen John Hall, Trevor Storm and Kayne Lautner, great nieces; Taylor Storm and Kaylyn Lautner, special friend, Joy Loney and numerous extended family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Billy Snook and half-brother, Bernard Johnson. Funeral service will be 11:00 am, Saturday, November 23, 2019 at Thomas Funeral Home in Corydon. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service from 10-11 am. Interment will be privately held at Cambria Cemetery at a later time. Memorials may be given to Cambria Cemetery or Prairie Trails Museum and condolences may be shared at www.thomasfh.com or facebook.com/thomasfuneralhome. John was looking forward to voting in the 2020 election. He would encourage everyone to exercise their civil duty and vote in his honor. He would vote Democrat.
