Interment in the Montezuma Masonic IOOF Cemetery, Montezuma, Poweshiek County, Iowa John Souter was born August 4, 1837 in Ashland County, Ohio the son of Robert and Elizabeth Souter. He received his education at Ashland County schools and Oberlin Collage, Lorain County, Ohio. After collage he taught school in Ohio until he was 25. He came to Deep River, Iowa in 1862 where he learned the carpenter trade. In the summer he was a carpenter and taught school in the winter. In 1868 he removed to Pleasant Township, Poweshiek County, Iowa. He bought a farm south of Ewart, which has been the family home and owned until the time of his death. His first marriage was to Anna G Coutts on February 11, 1874 in Savannah, Ashland County, Ohio. To this union was born one daughter. She was born on May 14, 1875. Annie passed away on May 20, 1875. The baby died on May 25, 1875. His second marriage was to Agnes N McMeekin on November 18, 1875 in Poweshiek County, Iowa. To this union were born two sons and a daughter. He held the office of Justice of the Peace for a number of years and in 1876 was elected Township Assessor which he held for a number of years. He united with the Ewart Christian Church at an early age and was a faithful member. Since the death of his wife in 1911 he has made his home with his two sons. Part time with the youngest son, Robert, on the farm, but most of the time with his oldest son, John in Grinnell. The daughter died in 1917.
