According to History of Westmoreland County he was born in Maryland. He married Catherine Thomas in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. the daughter of Garret/Gearhardt and Mary Magdalene Thomas' He was a soldier in the Revolutionary war, a lieutenant in the militia. In church connections, he was a Methodist. He and Catherine Sowash were the parents of 15 children, of whom three died young.
