John Stacy Backus, 76, 1 resident of the Seneca community for the past 15 years, died Sunday night in the Topeka State hospital. He had been ill for the past 15 months with complications arising from hardening of the arteries. Mr. Backus was born in Yarmouth, Canada, June 25, 1854. In Canada he met the young lady who became his bride. They were married at her mother's home in High Bridge, New Jersey on December 23, 1875. They returned to Canada to live for a number of years. Then they moved to Roseville, Ill. and from thence came west to Centralia in 1882. They continued to reside near Centralia and Onaga until they came to Seneca 15 years ago to live on the Uncle Joe Dennis farm south of town. Later Mr. Backus purchased the tract of ground and his home in the south part of town. He was a good citizen, industrious in habits, and as long as he was able, tilled the soil. He leaves his widow and two children, Carl Backus, Newton, Iowa, and Mrs. Eva Kelly at Onaga. There are seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He was a member of the I. O. O. F. lodge in Neuchatel. The funeral and burial will be at Neuchatel.
