A very large company of neighbors and old friends were present to pay respect to a man who was highly esteemed by all. The pallbearers were old friends and neighbors: Bale Chilson, Jas. Chilon, Levi Wolf, Ren McKinley, C. W. Kurz and J. C. Green. John Stafford was the son of Baalam and Mary Stafford and was born in Kent County, Delaware, October 20, 1828, and was aged 88 years, seven months and seventeen days when death sailed him. He was married August 29, 1850, to Delilah Bevans in Peoria County, Illinois, the wife passing away in November, 1906. To them were born five children, two dying in infancy. One daughter, Mrs. Viola Okell, died in 1887. Two children survive, Mrs. D. S. Long of Adrian, Minn., and Grant Stafford of this community. Six grandchildren also survive him. Mr. Stafford came to Iowa in 1852, settling in Louisa County. Taking up eighty acres he built a little log cabin 6 feet square, and he began breaking the wild prairie land with four to six yoke of oxen, and making improvements on the place that was his home all the years since. His success in life was most praiseworthy, for his start in life, so far as capital was concerned, was only a willing heart, strong arms and a determination to succeed, and by indomitable energy and enterprise he achieved a great success and became one of the foremost farmers and stock raisers of this part of the state. He gave liberally of his money and influence to the advancement of all educational interests of the county. In his death the last of the pioneers in his community has gone to his reward. A few months ago he told a visiting friend, a neighbor, that as he grew older he had changed his views and beliefs concerning many things. He always seemed pleased when the minster visited him during his illness. Bereft of sight in his last days, who knows but that he had a clearer vision of things unseen, spiritual and eternal.
