Wright, was drowned at the Spurrier pond, a mile west of Lamoni, Tuesday night about 7:30. John D., as he was called, ate supper with Rogene Lewis, and together the boys, after doing some chores at the Lewis home, started early for scout meeting and decided to take a plunge in the pond before going. Soon after they arrived, while they were paddling near the shore, Chas. Minor, George Briggs and Leighton Wise who are regarded as good swimmers, came along and feeling safer in their presence, John D. ventured into deep water. Just what happened no one will ever know, but Rogene noticed John D. Go down and called to the other boys at the other end of the pond, that he was drowning. They thought, however, that he was just ducking, and did not heed for some seconds, but when he did not come up they rushed to him, and pulled his apparently lifeless body to shore, having to dive several times for it. The boys rendered first aid, trying to resuscitate him for several minutes, a physician was soon called, and many people gathered to help. Everything was done to bring him back to life, but to no avail. The lad was troubled with a weak heart, and his parents had always guarded him from deep water on that account, but whether his death is attributed to a heart attack is not known. John D. was a very promising boy, a member of the Boy Scouts and a junior in high school next year. He was winner of high honors in several branches of the local and district academic contest this spring. He has lived in Lamoni but a few years, but during that time has made many friends. He was studious, kind, and of a very lovable disposition, and was a great help to his parents. Of the immediate family he leaves to mourn besides his parents, a sister, Barbara, and a brother, Gerald. Funeral services will be held from the residence on East Main street Thursday afternoon, at 1:30. - Lamoni Chronicle.
