Burial at North Lawn Memorial Park in Spencer. John Steven Welle, the 10th child of Lester and Pearl (Arms) Welle, was born May 9, 1949, on a farm located southwest of Milford. His childhood years were spent growing up on the farm. He attended Okoboji Twp. Consolidated School for his Elementary years. He then attended school at Milford during his junior high and part of his high school years before finishing his high school years at San Pedro and Buena Park High Schools in California before returning back to Iowa. He graduated in 1967. After graduation, John attended Nettleton Technical Institute at Columbus, Neb., where he studied in commercial building construction technology, before graduating there in 1969. From there, John moved to California where he worked as a civil engineering designer in Los Angeles. The company that he was employed with was designing a city near San Diego. After completing this project, John returned back to Iowa where he worked for the Northwest Iowa Regional Council of Governments and the Clay County Engineers Office. Also during this time he pursued other opportunities with being a graphic designer in his sign business of 42 years and his screen printing business of 14 years. He is also the designer of the "Iowa Great Lakes Treasure Map." Over the years, John has created many maps and promotional materials and displays. For the last 20 years John has also served the U.S. Postal Service as a rural carrier out of Spencer. John was baptized at Little Sioux Lutheran Church and was confirmed there in 1963. He was a member of Hope Lutheran Church in Everly where he served for several years on the Treasurer's Board. In April of 1986, he married Nancy Jo Brock at Hope Lutheran Church. They made their home in Fostoria where they raised their two children: A daughter, Lisa and a son, Daniel. John enjoyed vacation trips with his family as they traveled to historical sites in the United States. Along with this, he enjoyed doing landscaping, gardening and canning with his wife. John passed away at Spencer Municipal Hospital with his family at his side. His battle with cancer for two years came to an end as he went to be with the Lord. He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Jessica, and a brother, Michael. John is survived by his wife, Nancy, a daughter, Lisa and a son, Daniel. Also six brothers, Edwin "LeRoy" and wife Marie of Milford, Jerry and wife Rose of Milford, Verle "Dean" of Saville, Fla., Bill and wife Bonnie of Spencer, David of Milford and Bob of Milford and three sisters, Jeannine Winter of Fostoria, DeAnne and husband Norman Van Enter of Spencer and Bonnie Gilbertson, Apache Junction, Ariz. He is also survived by sister-in-law Marcia Welle of Spirit Lake, sister-in-law Linda Schomaker of Minneapolis, Minn. and many, many nieces and nephews, other relatives and family friends.
