WPA RECORD:STRAIN, John Born: 30 JUL 1816 Died: 30 DEC 1906 Cemetery: HIGHLAND Location: HARRISON County: MAHASKA CO. - IOWA Eddyville, Jan. 5.—John Strain, an old and esteemed settler residing about nine miles north west of town in West Des Moines township, Mahaska county, in the vicinity of Lakonta, passed away at 7 o'clock Wednesday evening, December 30, aged 89 years and 5 months. Mr. Strain formerly lived in and around Eddyville but for about eight years he had lived with his daughter, Mrs. John Smith near Lakonta at whose home he died. Besides Mrs. Smith, he has a son, Hugh Strain, living near Kirkville and a daughter, Mrs. John Arnold, formerly of Oskaloosa, but now of California, also an aged wife and sister, Mrs. L. Shane of Oskaloosa. The daughter and her family from California have been back on an extended visit the past six weeks. Mr. Strain had been ailing all winter, but was only really sick for a week or ten days. Death was caused by old age. The funeral took place at 10 a. m., Friday at the residence, with interment in Highland cemetery at Eddyville. Click on image for best view Died at the home of his daughter in West Des Moines township, Mahaska county,Wednesday, December 30th, 03, at 7 p. m., John Strain, aged 88 years, 5 months and, 4 days. John Strain was born in Virginia in 1815. He moved to Ohio with his parents in his boyhood. He was married in that state in 1843, and to Mr. and Mrs. Strain were born six ohildren, three of whom with the wife, survive him. The living children are: Hugh Strain, south·east of town; Mrs. John Smith,at whose home he passed away and Mrs. John Arnold of Oskaloosa. He came to Iowa In 1859, and it is now believed he had lived in this locality ever since.He lived a few miles east of town and in town up till about eight years ago when he and his aged companion went to make their home with their danghter, nine or ten miles north·west In the vicinity of Lakonta. Mrs. L. Shane of Oskaloosa, was a sister of the deceased. Mr. Strain. who was a highly esteemed and prominent citizen, had been ailing for four or five years, but was not taken down sick till Christmas, death being due to old age. The funeral was held Friday forenoon at 10 O'clock at the residence. After services by Rev. W. R. Yard, the Baptist pastor here. The body was brought to Highland cemetery for burial. (From the Eddyville section of The Albia Union, Albia, Iowa, January John & Casandra came to Wapello County Iowa by covered wagon from Ohio about 1861. Their children were: Elizabeth, LaVina, Hugh, Thomas, John & Roseamont.
