Burial will be private - Tucker will be laid to rest next to Viv at Gabe Rock Cemetery in Banner County where he was the caretaker for many years. Memorials may be sent to Central Church of Christ, Prairie Haven Hospice or The Banner County Historical Society. Cremation was at Sunset Memorial Park Crematory in Scottsbluff. Gering Memorial Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. John Sumner "Tucker" Hughbanks was born at home in Banner County on Sept. 20, 1923 to John Wesley "Jack" and Adah Gazelle (Pierce) Hughbanks. He attended public school and graduated Harrisburg High School in 1942. He entered the U.S. Navy right out of high school and was sent to diesel mechanics school at the University of Missouri in Columbia. While attending the University he met his future wife, Emma Vivian Shearer whom he married in Long Beach. Calif. on Oct. 3, 1944. To this union three children were born. While in the service in the Pacific Theater during WWII Tucker served on the USS President Hayes, USS Reina Mercedes and the USS LST 354. During the war, Tucker was in every major battle in the Pacific except the battle for Mid-way Island. He watched the flag go up at Iwo Jima. During his service he was awarded The Asiatic Pacific Area Campaign Medal, the American Area Campaign Medal, the World War II Victory Medal and the Philippine Liberation Medal. He was discharged on Aug. 6, 1946. Tucker returned to Ban-ner County where he and Viv farmed and ranched for 53 years until her death. He was a member of Good Shepherd of the Plains Episcopal Church where he served as senior warden, and later the Central Church of Christ after his move to Gering. He served on the Banner County Volunteer Fire Department, was a member of the Banner County Historical Society, as well as a member of the Knights of Pythias, Lions Club, Elks Lodge and was a volunteer at FARM. On Sept. 8, 1997 Tucker married Myrtle Hulbert and they settled into retirement in Gering where he enjoyed playing golf and cribbage with friends. Surviving Tucker is his wife, Myrtle, two daughters, Joanna (Jim) Askew, of Denver and Australia, Jerri (Russell) Kumm, of Stanton, Neb., one son, R.L. "Gus" (Shirley) Hughbanks, of Washington DC, four grandchildren: Brandon (Jennifer) Kumm, Whitney Kumm, Joshua Hughbanks, and Kasey Hughbanks and three great-grandchildren: Tristan Kumm, Ijah Pullaro, and Sammy Agnew, three step-grandchildren, and six step-great-grandchildren all of Australia. He is also survived by two sisters: Esther Bell and Norma Jean Henslee both of Bakersfield, Calif., three nieces: Patt Sandrini, Jeannie Fisher, and Julia Johnson, and one nephew, Rory Hughbanks, their spouses and children. Also surviving are three step-children: Juli (Wes) Hardin, Bryan (Susan) Hulbert, and Kent (Staci) Hulbert, eight step-grandchildren, and nine step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by two brothers, one sister, and his great-grandson, Zielig Hughbanks.
