Read More	FATALLY HURT IN MONTVILLE PAPER MILL New London, Oct. 7. (AP) -- Drawn in between the heavy steam heated rollers of a paper drying machine, John Merriman, Jr., 19 of Oakdale, was fatally injured at the Robertson Paper Company mill at Montville early this morning before 6 o'clock. The young man died en route to the Lawrence and Memorial Associated hospital. His right arm was badly mangled, skull probably fractured and internal injuries suffered. Young Merriman had been employed at the paper mill at different periods for the past three years and according to members of the family, was doing an "extra turn" or working an extra shift last night. Apparently his fingers got caught between the revolving rollers of the drying machine and drew the arm through, inflicting fatal injuries before the other employees could shut off power on the machine. The rollers were jacked up and the young man rushed to the office of Dr. John J. Donahue at Montville. Dr. Donahue stated that the young man was in a dying condition when brought to his office and ordered his immediate transfer to the hospital. He died before reaching the hospital. The deceased is survived by his parents, five sisters and three brothers. They are Mr. and Mrs. John Merriman, Mrs. Myrtle Pase [sic - should be Tate], Mrs Stella Hammond, Mrs. Emma Carroll [sic - should be Clifford], and Margaret [sic - should be Martha] Merriman and Arthur, Frank and Raymond Merriman. The body was removed to an undertaking establishment in Norwich. It is expected that the funeral will be held Sunday. OBITUARY OF JOHN MERRIMAN The funeral of John Merriman of Oakdale was held Saturday afternoon from the parlors of Undertaker C.A. Gager, No. 70 Franklin street with a large attendance of relatives and friends. The service was conducted by Rev. Alexander H. Abbott, pastor of the United Congregational church, and Mrs. William Crowe, Jr. sang Nearer My God to Thee and Asleep in Jesus. A military burial service took place at the West Plain cemetery as Mr. Merriman was a member of Battery A., 192nd F.A.C.N.G. [Field Artillery Connecticut National Guard] of New London. There was a firing squad at the grave and taps was sounded by Bugler George A. Taylor. The bearers were Sidney Well, Frank Remington, Levi Kenerson, and Leander Gardner, all members of Battery A. There was a wealth of beautiful floral tributes. Mr. Merriman was fatally injured at the Robertson Paper mill in Oakdale early Thursday morning.
