Read More	Evening Times; Cumberland, Maryland, Thursday December 2, 1937: Lonaconing—Man Killed In Unusual Accident—While engaged in picking coal under the tipple of the Pekin Mine of the A. K. Althouse Coal Co., John Thomas Danahey was fatally injured early yesterday morning, when a large lump of coal fell from a car striking him on the head. As was his daily custom, he went to the tipple for his morning's supply of coal which was gathered from the overflow of cars as they were loaded for movement on the railroad. The lump of coal which struck him, fractured his skull, penetrating the brain. He was taken to the Miners' Hospital, Frostburg, in an Eichhorn ambulance, but died en route. Mr. Danahey was a native of Ireland, County Cork, and came to this country when but five years of age, settling in Martinsburg, W.Va., later moving to this section, where he since resided. He was the son of the late Matthew and Margaret Danahey, the former an employee of the Cumberland and Pennsylvania Railroad Co. who was killed on the Union Street crossing by a runaway team of horses, while tossing a child from the path of the team. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Helen Ricker Danahey, and the following children: John, Leo, Frederick, Julius, Mrs. John W. Fitzpatrick, Mrs. Harry Garlitz, Mrs. Helen Folmar, all of Elm Grove, W. Va., and Mrs. Harry W. Reed, Beall street, Cumberland. He is also survived by thirty-one grandchildren. One sister, Miss Mary Danahey, Pekin, with whom he made his home, also survives. Mr. Danahey was a miner for many yrears, later being an employee of the Cumberland Contraction Company. He was a member of St. Gabriel's Catholic Church, Barton, Md. 18 ANNUAL REPORT OF MARYLAND BUREAU OF MINES On December 1, 1937, about 7 :45 A. M., Thomas Danahey was killed at the Pekin Mine, working the Big Vein seam of coal, of the Big Vein Coal Company of Lonaconing, Inc., Lonaconing, Md., while picking coal under the tipple. The dump man on the tipple pulled a piece of bone coal from a loaded car as it was being dumped which fell on Mr. Danahey striking him on the head, fracturing his skull. Time of Accident—December 1, 1937, about 7:45 A. M. Time of Death—December 1, 1937. Name of Injured—Thomas Danahey. Nationality—Irish. Age—67 years. Married or Single—Married. Number of Dependents—None. Residence—Pekin, Md. Inspector in Charge of District—C. J. Rowe. Time and Date of Inspection December 3, 1937, by C. J. Rowe. Recommendation-Coal pickers must be kept away from tipple while mine is in operation. Thomas Danahey died on December 1, 1937, from an accident which occurred on the same day. This is not a real mine accident as the deceased was a trespasser and was killed by a fall of coal on the tipple and was really on railroad property when the accident occurred. Men and boys, and sometimes women, crowd around the tipples in spite of the best efforts of the inspector to keep them away.
