Mrs. Monroe Batterson, 78, of 809 Center avenue, died at 4 a.m. at the St. Joseph hospital, following a short illness. John Dowell, 76, Ottumwa, her brother, died at 5 a.m. at 521 Ottumwa Street. They were children of Alexander and Rebecca Dowell. Mrs. Batteron was born at Mt. Zion, Iowa, May 22, 1873. She had been a resident of ottumwa for 55 years. Her marriage to Monroe (Bud) Batterson took place September 12, 1899. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1949. Mrs. Batterson was a member of Wesley Methodist church and O.E.S. No. 112. Surviving are her husband; three sons, Arthur of Unionville, Rex of Ottumwa, and Russell of Ottumwa; a daughter, Mrs. Edna Hansel of Oskaloosa; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Her parents, four brothers and a sister preceded her in death, John Dowell was a fifth brother. Funeral services for Mrs. Batterson will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Johnson funeral chapel, in charge of LeRoy Kindschun, assistant pastor of First Lutheran church. Burial will be in Memorial Lawn cemetery. John Dowell, 76, was also born at Mt. Zion, May 17, 1875. He had been a resident of Ottumwa 55 years. He was a retired railroader, and a member of the Eagles lodge. Nieces and nephews survive. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. at the Johnson funeral chapel, in charge of Mr. Kindschun. Burial will be in Shaul cemetery, with members of the Eagles lodge serving as pallbearers.
