Jamestown Alert, ND November 14, 1932 John Gallagher Died Early Today West of Buchanan Funeral Services Will Be Held Wednesday In Jamestown John Gallagher, 46, who with family has lived on a farm west Buchanan for 10 years, died this morning at 1 o'clock from stroke of apoplexy after an illness of just a few hours. Mr. Gallagher was born at Fairfax, Minn., November 27, 1912, was married to Miss Violet Miller Mapleton. Surviving are his wife and nine children and a brother, Ray, who lives on the farm and a sister, Mrs. Christ Christensen. The children range in age from 19 years down to the baby, two years old. The children are Burl, Roy, Lyle, and Nyle, twins; Delmer, John, and Velva, twins; Vervoia and Dorothy Mae. Two sons died in infancy. Mrs. W. C. Waxler, Hugh and Verel Miller, Jamestown, and John Miller of Buchanan are Mrs. Gallagher's brothers and sister. Funeral services will be held at the Eddy Funeral Chapel, Wednesday afternoon at 3 o'clock with Rev. W. A. Weyhraueh in charge. Burial will be made in the Cleveland cemetery. Additional information provided by John Gallagher, grandson of John and Violet Gallagher. Would like to add some basic family information to this, my paternal grandfather's bio. He died of a stroke on a rented farm in Hidden Township in the depths of the Great Depression, leaving my grandmother with nine children, teenaged to toddler stage. Grandma used to tell us the story again and again. "He said, 'I've had a stroke, haven't I, Mae ... is my leg dragging? Just one, though.'" She helped him to the bed, and he died during the night. Dad said all he can remember is her coming down in the morning wringing her hands. She refused to move into town where some assistance might be had, claiming, "I wouldn't ever know where my children were." They stayed on this farm for a time, but ended up hopping from rented site to rented site until they ended up at Vashti, where the farm is still in the family. My dad, Nyle, was 16 at the time of Grandpa's death. Nyle loved life so greatly and used to say he would gladly live his life all over again in the very same way, "Except the dark years, when Daddy died." The family looked into their deceased father's wallet and found nothing save a small amount of Days-o-Work plub tobacco.
