Mr. McCord was born on December 7, 1924 to the late John Thomas Logan McCord and Dempsey Dixon in Greenwood, SC. He majored in English at Lander College, after which he started his illustrious military career. John was an infantryman in the U.S. Army in the European theater during WWII. Mr. McCord was born on December 7, 1924 to the late John Thomas Logan McCord and Dempsey Dixon in Greenwood, SC. He majored in English at Lander College, after which he started his illustrious military career. John was an infantryman in the U.S. Army in the European theater during WWII. He served as a U.S. Army Air Corps fighter pilot. He also served as a fighter pilot in the U.S. Air Force, where he retired as a Major. John was the retired Chief of Advertising for the U.S. Army; Chief of Education, U.S. Army Recruiting Command. He was a member of the 71st Infantry Division Association; The Retired Officers Association; The Military Officers Association and the American Legion. John was also decorated with the following medals; Two Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Medal, American Theater Medal, European Theater Medal, European Occupation Medal, Victory Medal, WWII and Combat Infantry Badges. He was a member of Incarnation Lutheran Church in Marietta, GA. John is survived by his wife, Barbara Oswald McCord; sons, John Thomas Logan McCord III of Fairburn, GA; Brooks Graham McCord of Suwanee, GA; Derek Dixon McCord of Cumming, GA; daughter, Marsha McCord Byrd of Birmingham, AL; sisters, Lorene McCord Cole of Lexington, NC; Christine McCord Galphin of Greenwood, SC; Rita McCord Boxx of Greenwood, SC. Sixteen grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, daughters-in-law, nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 20, 2010 at 11 a.m. at Incarnation Lutheran Church in Marietta. Burial will follow in Cheatham Hill Memorial Park with full military honors. The family will receive friends on Thursday from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. H.M. Patterson and Son, Canton Hill Chapel is honored to be serving the family of John Thomas Logan McCord, Jr.
