Description	:	Mr. John T. McIlwain departed this life, November 16, 1939. At the time of his passing he was with his son, Johnnie McIlwain of Anson, Texas. Mr. McIlwain, affectionately known as "Uncle" John by many of his friends throughout this section, lived to the ripe age of ninety. He was born in Mississippi, November 5, 1849, being ninety years and eleven days of age at the time of his passing. There were few people, not in public life, more widely known than was Mr. McIlwain. At the time of his passing he was with his son, Johnnie McIlwain of Anson, Texas. Mr. McIlwain, affectionately known as "Uncle" John by many of his friends throughout this section, lived to the ripe age of ninety. He was born in Mississippi, November 5, 1849, being ninety years and eleven days of age at the time of his passing. There were few people, not in public life, more widely known than was Mr. McIlwain. He was honest, sincere, and upright. He was a noble father, a loyal friend, and a worthy citizen. In this manner there was no ostentation, having lived a plain and simple life, entirely above reproach. How truly can it be said that, "He was a man without gile." Funeral services were held at 10:30 Saturday at Sardis. Interment was made in the Sardis Cemetery. Mr. McIlwain was the father of fourteen children, nine of whom survive him. They are: five sons, Johnnie of Anson, Texas; Lafayette, Enon, La.; Crawford, Corpus Christi, Texas; Charley, Mathis, Texas; and Ira of Long Beach, California. Four daughters survive, Mrs. Martha Payne, Albuquerque, New Mexico; Mrs. Tiny McManus, Mathis, Texas; Mrs. Edith O'Neal, Bunkie, La.; Mrs. Ella Craig, State of Washington, and a host of grand and great grandchildren. Three sisters also survive, Mrs. Lizzie Gant, Bentley; Mrs. Marion Melton, Winnfield, and Mrs. J. L. Durham, Atlanta. Published in The Winn Parish Enterprise, November 23, 1939
