Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Le Mars United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Mike Janes officiating. Burial will be in Resthaven Memory Gardens Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the American Legion Wasmer Post 241 of Le Mars. Visitation will resume 10 a.m. until service time Saturday at the church. John Thomas Trobaugh was born Feb. 14, 1920, near Westfield, Iowa, the youngest son of John and Odessa (Lemming) Trobaugh. He attended country school until he was old enough to help on the family farm. On Jan. 13, 1941, he joined Company K of the Iowa National Guard based in Le Mars. Following basic training, he served with the Allied Forces in the invasion of North Africa and Italy. He was seriously wounded near Rome, Italy and was awarded the Purple Heart Medal. He was honorably discharged from the U.S. Army on May 28, 1945. He was united in marriage to Dorothy Downing on June 16, 1946 at First United Methodist Church in Le Mars. In June 2006, the couple celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. He worked as a self-employed grain trader for several years before beginning his career with Murphy and Hubbard Feeds in Sioux City, retiring in the mid 1980s. He enjoyed playing cards and visiting with friends. The couple enjoyed watching the grandsons play sports. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion Wasmer Post 241. He was a longtime member of the church and had served as head usher for many years and was one of the original members of the Keystone Class at the church. He enjoyed volunteering at the local nursing homes and the Le Mars Senior Citizens Center. Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Dorothy of Le Mars; two sons, Tom and Mark of Le Mars; a daughter and her husband, Pat and Glen Kruse of Sioux City; two grandsons, Justin Kruse and his wife, Jodee of Houston, Texas, and Kevin Kruse of Sioux City; a brother and his wife, Jack and Maxine Trobaugh of Tallahassee, Fla.; two sisters, Ethel Diaz of Claremont, Calif., and Marie Anderson of Le Mars; her in-laws, Virginia and John Brangwin of Le Mars, Evelyn and Lloyd Kallsen of Le Mars and Joyce and Stan Nervig of Marcus, Iowa; several nieces and nephews; and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, John of Odessa (Lemming) Trobaugh; a brother and his wife, Robert and Opal Trobaugh; a sister and her husband, Ida and Harley Arnett; and in-laws, Betty and Carl Ahrendt.
