John Thomas Tuggle was born in Marion county, Mo, Oct. 4, 1834, and came to Shelby county in 1848, and died at his home near Leonard, Aug. 7, 1894, at the age 59 years, 10 months and three days. He was married to Miss Callie Davis, Dec. 26, 1860. His parents died when he was 17 years old, leaving him to care for a large family and most faithfully did he perform his duty. He had been sick only a short time but his sufferings were intense; all that loving hearts and tender hands could do was done for him, but God in his infinite mercy and wisdom has seen fit to take him from us and human power could not stay him. His mission on earth is finished and he has responded to the call "come up higher." One more seat is vacant in our home, a voice we loved is stilled, a place is vacant in our hearts which never can be filler. It is so hard to give him up, but then the Lord loveth whom he chastiseth. He leaves a wife, six children, several grandchildren, sister, brothers and a host of relatives and friends to mourn his departure; but we weep not as those who have no hope. He made a profession of religion under the ministry of Rev. E.C. Browning and united with the Antioch Christian church in 1873, where he has since been a good and faithful member. He bore all his sufferings with christian patience and fortitude and told his wife when first taken sick that he would not get well. He was conscious until his death and told his sons on Monday that his hours were few but that he would die happy. He seemed to be only waiting for the boatman to come to bear him to the other shore, beyond this land of suffering where there is no more sorrow. Oh how he appreciated the efforts of us all to help him, and how it seemed to distress him to see us grieve for him. He was a good man, honest, upright, faithful in all things, loved and respected by all who knew him. Mrs. Tuggle has lost a devoted husband, his children a true friend and counselor, the community a good citizen and the church a faithful member. But our Father in Heaven had need of him and we submit all to his will. To the sorrowing ones he leaves a precious memory. May the God of all mercy and grace comfort the bereaved ones, and may he help them to lives as did their father, that when the summons comes to them, they too may be ready. The funeral services were conducted at Leonard by the pastor, Rev. Lowe, after which the remains were laid to rest in the cemetery, there to await the final resurrection day to bear the word of the master, "come, inherit the kingdom prepared for you."
