Description	:	In the 1860 Census, John is 27, in household with Miles (64), Olive (57) and Everett (18). John Towers was a Private, Co. I, 4th Regiment, Maine Infantry. This unit was organized in Rockland, Maine. Private Towers both enrolled & was mustered into service 15 June 1861 at Rockland. After other duties & engagements since the time of enlistment, Private Towers and his unit were engaged at the battle called Fredericksburg I or Marye's Heights, part of a larger engagement commanded by Maj. This unit was organized in Rockland, Maine. Private Towers both enrolled & was mustered into service 15 June 1861 at Rockland. After other duties & engagements since the time of enlistment, Private Towers and his unit were engaged at the battle called Fredericksburg I or Marye's Heights, part of a larger engagement commanded by Maj. General Ambrose Burnside. On Dec. 11, 1862, Union engineers laid pontoon bridges across the Rappahannock River, on the 12th, the bridges were crossed while under fire. The major (and not successful) attack by the Union happened on Dec. 13th, the day Private Towers was shot and died of his wound. Mother, Olive Towers, filed a pension application which is acknowledged July 23, 1863. In the 27 pages surrounding this application, accessed via Fold3 on 8/13/2017, it is discovered that Private Towers, while an active duty soldier, sent money home for the support of his Mother Olive and Father Miles. Neither parent was able to work gainfully, father with severe Rheumatism.
