He grew up and attended school in Savage, graduating from Savage High School in 1929. He was baptized in the UCC Church and was confirmed at the First Lutheran Church in Savage. JV entered the U.S. Army on Aug. 24, 1942, serving in World War II. He was honorably discharged on Jan. 3, 1946, returning to Savage and working as an auto mechanic at Forry Garage, Valley Garage and Williams Motors. JV was united in marriage to Edna Gabel on April 26, 1952, in Miles City. In June of 1953 they had a son John C. He continued working as an auto mechanic until 1956 when he started working for the Lower Yellowstone Irrigation Project(LYIP)as a crew hand and later became the water master. His wife Edna, passed away in November of 1984. JV retired from the LYIP in 1986 and remained in Savage. JV was a life member of the V.F.W. Post #4099 of Sidney. He also retired from the Savage Volunteer Fire Department. JV enjoyed fishing, hunting and spending a lot of quality time with his two grandchildren and dog. He also enjoyed his garden, watching it grow and doing crossword puzzles, while keeping a daily journal. JV passed away on April 6, 2007, at his home with his family by his side. JV is survived by his son John C. and wife, Lynette(Hamburg), Hoon, Savage; his granddaughter Aliza Wood, Cincinnati, Ohio; his grandson, John V. Hoon, Savage and his great grandson Landon Wood of Cincinnati, Ohio. He is preceded in death by his parents, John Jacob and Lillie Mae, and is beloved wife, Edna.
