Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Spalding. The Rev. John Schlaf will officiate. Burial with military rites will be in St. Michael's Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the church with rosaries at 4:30 and 7 p.m. Dolce-Scheef Mortuary of Spalding is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Schlaf was born Nov. 3, 1909, in Spalding to William and Myrtle (Wray) Schlaf. He attended Spalding Public School and graduated in 1928. Mr. Schlaf owned and operated the Phillips 66 Service Station in Spalding. He served in the U.S. Army from 1944 to 1946. In 1958 Mr. Schlaf became a rural mail carrier until his retirement. On May 22, 1933, he married Marie Krausnick at St. Michael's Church in Spalding. Mrs. Schlaf died July 29, 1967. He married Helen Berberich on Nov. 28, 1968. The couple moved to Grand Island in March 1998. Survivors include his wife; two sons, William of Las Vegas, Nev. and The Rev. John of Ogallala; one step son, William Berberich of Atlanta, Ga.; four step daughters, Kay Brungardt of Norfolk, Janet (Mrs. Tom) Smyth of Arvada, Colo., Mary Berberich of Omaha and Joan (Mrs. Ron) Socha of Grand Island; one sister, Mary Sear of Holdrege; 22 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.
