Scott II and Mary Elizabeth (Seymour) Scott. He graduated from Central High School in Grand Forks in 1950 and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in business from UND in 1954. Scott Jr. was born November 12, 1932, the son of John W. Scott II and Mary Elizabeth (Seymour) Scott. He graduated from Central High School in Grand Forks in 1950 and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in business from UND in 1954. In September, 1954, he married Joyce Macdonald of Valley City, N.D. He served in the U.S. Air Force and was honorably discharged as Captain John W. Scott. The couple returned to the family farm in Gilby, N.D., to raise their three children. John was the third generation of a family of farmers in the Red River Valley. His grandfather, John Scott, came to the Gilby area from Wisconsin in 1879 and made a homestead claim in what became Gilby Township in Grand Forks County. His son, John W. Scott IV, and his grandson-in-law, Eric Trueblood, continue to operate the farm. He served on the board of directors of the Valley Bank and Trust (Now Bremer Financial Corp.) He belonged to the North West Farm Managers Association and served on the board of directors of the American Quarter Horse Association for two decades. He is survived by his son, John Scott IV, of Gilby, called Jack, and daughters, Suzanne (Mike) Winkel, of Scottsdale, AZ, and Judith (Bob) Cowger of Grand Forks; grandchildren, Annie (Jared) Marquardt of Grafton, Jaime (Eric) Trueblood of Grand Forks, Jacob Winkel of Corvallis, OR, and Alexei Winkel of Scottsdale, AZ; and great-grandchildren, Graham Marquardt, Berit Trueblood, Vera Marquardt, and Afton Trueblood. He is also survived by his sister, Mary Scott Golden, called Bonnie, and his nephew, Judd Stewart, both of Bozeman, MT. He was preceded in death by Joyce Macdonald Scott of Scottsdale, AZ, and all of his favorite dogs, including Barney and Phyllis. John cherished his communications with everyone who visited in person or by phone when he wasn't able to be out in the community. Thank you for putting a smile on his face during these times. A very special thank you to the Valley Senior Living community where John lived for the last four years, to the individuals at Home Care Companions for their care during his time at home, and to the compassionate team at Hospice of the Red River Valley for their support. In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to Circle of Friends Animal Shelter. Funeral Services will be 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 6, 2021 in Trinity Lutheran Church, Manvel, North Dakota, with visitation from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m in the church. Private interment will be at Gilby, North Dakota. The family respectfully encourages masks for those who attend the service. The service will be available via livestream on the Trinity Lutheran Church Manvel Facebook page for those unable to attend.
