Son of Jonas Lipe and Mary Polly Downes OBITUARY THE CHARITON LEADER Chariton, Iowa Thursday, May 5, 1910 PIONEER CITIZEN PASSES AWAY John Lipe was born in Randolph county, N.C., Jan. 9, 1829, and departed this life April 29, 1910, aged 81 years, 3 months and 20 days, at his home in Ottercreek township, Lucas county, Iowa. When three years old he moved with his parents to Hendricks county, Indiana, where he grew to manhood. In the autumn of 1861 he drove a team to Iowa and settled on a place near where he has since resided. Being on the frontier he endured the hardships of those early days and spent many a weary month clearing brush and trees from fields for cultivation. After 11 years of this life his faithful wife died leaving him with five little children. In 1874 he married Elizabeth Hosier, who survives him. He was the father of ten children, five of whom survive him: John Wesley, Martha E. Pfrimmer, Sadie F. Eaton, Adda Harvey and Alvie L. Baker. For over two years he was a patient sufferer from ill health caused by exposure during the late Rebellion. His faithful wife and son were constantly at his bedside to relieve him during his declining days. At 4:00 a.m. Friday, this old soldier, surrounded by his children and old neighbors, being defeated in the last great conflict, gave up and went over to pitch his tent on "fame's eternal camping ground." The deceased was a member of Co. C., 4th Iowa Reg. of Vol. in the Union Army in the Civil War. The funeral was preached in the E. B. church by the pastor, Rev. D. E. DeCamp, and he was laid to rest in the Fletcher cemetery. John Lipe was respected by all who knew him as an honest and upright man. He was a life long Democrat, one of the old school, voting for every democratic presidential candidate since Franklin Pierce. Taking an active interest in politics, he never held, nor aspired to, a political office in his life. The departed leaves a wife, one sister, five children, 30 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild and a host of friends to mourn his loss. Obituary courtesy of Charles M. Wright
