MCLAUGHLIN was born in Marion County, Ohio, April 24, l840, and died at his home in Decatur, March l9, l908, aged 67 years, l0 months and 25 days. The deceased was the youngest of a family of six children. When fourteen years of age, he came with his mother's family to Decatur County, Iowa, and remained with his mother until August l5, l862, when he enlisted in Co. I, 34th Iowa Infantry. Five children were born to them, three of whom are now living; ANNA, LAURA, JAMES W. and REUBEN E., with the loving wife, one sister and many sorrowing friends to mourn his death. In the passing of JOHN W. MCLAUGHLIN, Decatur County has lost one of her very best citizens, the community one of her most noble characters, the wife a devoted and faithful husband, the two boys and remaining daughter, a kind hearted, loving father, and a multitude feel that they have lost a close, personal friend. He will be missed by the community as a good neighbor, by his Masonic and Odd Fellow Brethren as a faithful member, and by a host of friends as a wise counselor in business matters. While not a member of the church, he was a sincere friend to the church and was a faithful attendant at divine worship whenever his health would permit. To know the man was to admire him and one man in the community said: "I have known JOHN MCLAUGHLIN for 3l years, and whatever you say about him as a neighbor and citizen, or as a good man, you cannot put it too strong. He was the same honest, upright, conscientious man wherever you met him, whether in public life or in his home, in a business transaction or social intercourse. He was one of the oldest members of the Masonic Lodge in Decatur County, having become a member of Decatur Lodge No. l09, A.F.&A.M., June 24, l869. He had also been a member of the Decatur Odd Fellows Lodge for many years, and was Commander of the Decatur G.A.R. Post. Funeral services were held at the Christian Church at Decatur City, Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock, the sermon being preached by Elder J.S. Coffin, the services being under the auspices of the Masonic Lodge. Interment was at the Woodmansee Cemetery west of Decatur City. --------------------
