Description	:	John W. Vaughn was born in Millstreet, County Cork, Ireland on Jan 20, 1817; not sure yet who his parents were. He may have come to America in 1848 and married Catharine "Kate" Dougan 1828-1918 about 1853 probably in Virginia. The 1860 census near Harrisonburg, VA lists Kate as married to John W Vaughn 1817-1890, a railroad contractor, age 37 and Kate age 30 with 3 children, John Vaughn age 6 1854-1865 (died young), Mary Vaughn Brennan age 3 1857-1939, Jeremiah age 3 months 1860-1939. Kate and John had 7 children, the oldest named John died young 1854-1865 and so the last child is also named John 1870-1909 born in Maryville, MO. John was a railroad contractor in Virginia so they kept moving south from Rockingham county, VA and then during the Civil War, West Virginia split off. Sometime in 1869 they moved to Maryville, MO where the last child was born, John W Vaughn Jr 1870-1909. The other children: 4.Margaret Rose "Maggie" Vaughn McShane 1866-1917, 5.Elizabeth "Nell" Vaughn Tobin 1868-1945. Both born in Martinsburg, West Virginia. The Vaughn family lived on a farm near Maryville, MO. John Died on Mar 31, 1890 and Kate lived with her daughter "Aunt Kate" on Buchanan St in Maryville after that until Kate died 28 years later on Mar 5, 1918. Both are buried in St. Patrick's cemetery with a tall square monument listing several Vaughn names on the south side of the driveway.
