Wilkins and Ruth Davis Wilkins on May 26, 1920, at Geneva, and passed away December 28, 2007, at Fillmore County Hospital in Geneva at the age of 87 years, seven months and two days. Wilkins was born to William R. Wilkins and Ruth Davis Wilkins on May 26, 1920, at Geneva, and passed away December 28, 2007, at Fillmore County Hospital in Geneva at the age of 87 years, seven months and two days. He was one of five children in the family. He lived most of his life in Fillmore County where he graduated from Geneva High School in 1938. He married Shirley Corbin in 1940; to them three children were born. After serving his country in the Navy, he returned to Geneva, where he worked various jobs. On February 23, 1949, he married Donna G. Garrett; to this union seven children were born. He began working in the construction business where he designed and built several homes I Geneva, including three of his own family homes. He established Wilkins Steel Building Company and Geneva Harvestore as well as J Bar D Ranch. The ranch was a great source of enjoyment and pride as he bred and raised World Champion performance and cutting horses. On October 23, 2007, the American Quarter Horse Association honored and recognized him at a ceremony in Amarillo, Texas, for 50 consecutive years of raising Quarter horses. He was presented with the Lifetime Legacy Award for his accomplishment. John was a member of the Evangelical Free Church and several organizations including B H & L Grain, Odd Fellows, National Cutting Horse Association, Nebraska Cutting Horse Association, American Quarter Horse Association, Fillmore County Saddle Club and the Fillmore County Fair Board. He was also appointed to serve as a Nebraska Diplomat. He enjoyed many trips with wife, Donna and his family and friends throughout the years. Special trips included one to Austria to visit Roberta Schneider, who had been an exchange student with them in 1969. She remains a special part of the family to this day. Favorite pastimes include designing and building things out of wood for his family and friends, fishing, hunting, and playing cards. Without a doubt though, his greatest pleasure came from being with his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and attending many of their activities. Over the years, he collected many trophies from the horse business, but he would always say his real trophies were his kids and their families. He was a hero to his wife and children and a wonderful example of humility, generosity; unselfishness, perseverance, positive attitude, integrity, faith and unconditional love. He was preceded in death by parents, William R. Wilkins and Ruth Davis Wilkins; sisters, Welcome Reichert and Hope Mattox; two infant daughters; son, Gary Wilkins; grandsons Craig Wilkins and Austin Adkisson; great-grandson Chase Wilkins; six brothers-in-law and one sister-in-law. He is survived by wife Donna Wilkins; sons and daughters-in-law, Mike and Janet Wilkins; Bill and Karen Wilkins; Jim and Jacki Wilkins; daughters and sons-in-law, Jan and Jerry Stuck; Lorrie and Joe Eddmeiri; Linda and Jay Chapman; Becky and Steve Adkisson; Roberta Schneider; daughter-in-law, Ginger Wilkins; brother Don Wilkins; sister Marion Myers; sisters-in-law Evelyn West and Dorothy Garrett; and 36 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were conducted from Evangelical Church in Geneva on January 3, with Pastor Jeff Jensen officiating. Danelle Andres accompanied Delwin Myers who sang “On Eagle’s Wings” and the congregational singing of “How Great Thou Art,” “In Christ Alone,” “Walk by Faith” and “Because He Lives.” Pallbearers were grandsons: Mark, Joe, Tim, Dan and Bob Wilkins, Jeran Stuck, Iesa Eddmeiri, Justin, Tony and Ryan Chapman; and Jaeden Wilkins. Honorary pallbearers were Barry Wilkins and Matt Wilkins. Interment was in the Geneva Public Cemetery. The Nebraska Signal January 9th, 2008 page 4.
