He was born to Ada Mae Carner and James Bernard Stone, and grew up in Fredericksburg. He joined the Navy in 1945 and retired after 20 years of active duty, at which point he returned to Fredericksburg. Together they traveled the world and... Read More	John Wallace Stone, Navy Master Chief: Retired, 93, of Fredericksburg passed away on Monday, December 21, 2020 at his home. He was born to Ada Mae Carner and James Bernard Stone, and grew up in Fredericksburg. He joined the Navy in 1945 and retired after 20 years of active duty, at which point he returned to Fredericksburg. John worked for the Department of the Navy as a civilian employee for approximately 15 years. He married the love of his life, Cornelia Gould Avery, who preceded him in death in 2017. Together they traveled the world and raised four children, making homes in various duty stations in the continental U.S., Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and Japan. They were actively involved everywhere they went. His family always came first, but he had time to be involved in many activities and events. He was a member of the (USN) Cryptologist Society and the Fredericksburg Amateur Radio Club. He was involved in many aspects of other activities, usually lending a hand to anyone he felt needed one. Upon his “full” retirement, he worked preparing taxes, and at Motts Run Reservoir. The latter job allowed him to “wet a line” on a regular basis. He never met a stranger, and his laugh was heartfelt and heard often. Survivors include his children, William Stone (Deborah), John Stone, Jr. (Lynn), Brian Stone, and Alice Stone Brooks (Lynn); seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson. Due to the COVID-19 restrictions, the family will hold a small graveside service at 10:00 A.M. on Wednesday, December 30 at Oak Hill Cemetery. A much warranted celebration of life will be held at a later date.
