The Mathews Journal, Thurs, 7 Feb 1935, p4, c1 (snip) ... Mr. Lewis was one of the three remaining Confederate veterans in this county (Mathews). It is said that the death of Mr. lewis reduced the number of Confederate veterans in Mathews, Middlesex, Gloucester, King and Queen and King William to two - Rev. Giles B. Cooke and Mr. Elkanah Diggs, of this county. Mr. Lewis was born at Cobbs Creek, July 10, 1846, son of Addison T. and Lucy C. Lewis, both of whom did in 1859, when he was 14 years of age. At the age of 17 he enlisted in the Confederate army, joining the Mathews Artillery, March 16, 1863. He returned to his home April 20, 1865, at the close of the war. While on a special detail to help get a gun carriage out of the mud, he was taken prisoner. Determined to get back into battle, he escaped, but before he could find his way back to his company, Lee surrendered. Some time before he died, Mr. Lewis was heard to say that he remembered well the first "naval battle" of the war in Mathews. Two Yankee steamboats off Iron Point were engaged in battle with a Confederate battery placed by the Mathews Artillery on the Point. One of the steamboats was crippled. In 1931 Mr. Lewis wrote the following account of an experience of his in this county before he left for the front: "On March 17, 1863, my sister Betty and I (we were orphans) left the home of Capt. and Mrs. Frank Haynes with whom we lived, and went up the river in a boat to visit Mrs. Venable at Cowpen Point. The next day we were returning down the river our attention was attracted to some women waving to us from the shore at the place owned by Mr. Milton Hodges. Going ashore we learned from them that two steamboat loads of Yankees had landed at the mouth of Cobbs Creek, near our home. We left our boat and walked to the home of Mr. Bob Simmons, now owned and occupied by J. R. Thompson. From there we called to Mrs. Mary Hudgins on the opposite side of Cobbs Creek. Coming across the creek she called to ask "Where are the Yankees?" Before we could answer another voice cried, "Here we are." It seems a party of Yankees had left the main body and were coming along the shore. The old lady was badly frightened. "O Lord," she cried, "What shall I do," and laid down her paddle. We urged her on, however, and soon she had us across the creek, before the Yankees had a chance to molest us. We hurried home at once remembering that Mrs. Haynes had been alone when we left the day before. Soon afterwards we saw two Yankees running across the field. Mrs. Haynes thought they had seen me and taken me for a Confederate soldier and urged me to run before they caught me and took me away. I went out the back way and over to Mr. Jim Marchant's place and from there to Cobbs Creek Post Office. Here I found about fifteen Mathews Cavalrymen. I suggested that they go with me and make prisoners of the Yanks. But they figured the others would then do more harm than the prisoners would do good and declined to go. The next morning I got up about light and saw a large number of soldiers, mostly Negroes, in the field. They were pulling down our fence and building a fire to warm themselves by. I started out to find an officer but was stopped by one of the Negroes. He asked what I was going to do and when I told him he cocked his gun and told me to go back to the house or he would shoot me. Knowing he could and no doubt would, I obeyed, but as soon as I was out of sight, made a detour and finally located an officer, who not only stopped the men from pulling down the fence but sent another officer to the house to stand guard. About noon that day, March 19th, they all left."
