Her parents were Ruth Wasson (b. 4/6/1776 in Iredell Co, NC, d. 12/12/1859 Vernon, Van Buren, IA) and Rev. John Cephas McCreary (b. 8/6/1771 in Iredell Co, NC, d. 9/19/1857 in Keosauqua, Van Buren Co, IA ). They moved to Van Buren Co, IA in 1837. He was a farmer and the first county coroner of Van Buren Co, IA. They lived near the Des Moines River. John became ill in 1849, some said it was due to the damp river climate, and died March 16, 1849. After the death of her husband Rebecca, with her oldest son, William Thomas Gale, his wife, and the other children, moved to Orleans, Appanoose Co, IA. Rebecca died April 12, 1869, and is buried in the Orleans Cemetery, Moulton, Appanoose County, Iowa beside two of her sons, Harrison and Dorsey, both civil war veterans, who died not long after returning from the war. John's parents were John Wesley Gale, Sr (b.12/?/1765 in Kent Co, MD) and Pheobe Everett (b. ABT 1775 in Kent Co, MD).
