Read More	George Barnard Born March 22, 1845 Died May 13, 1935 John Wesley (George) Barnard was born at Kingston, Canada West March 22, 1845, the youngest of 13 children. He came with his parents to Hampshire, Kane County, Illinois when he was 2 & 1/2 years old. He was a Civil War veteran having enlisted in the U. S. army at the age of 17. He served 2 years and 10 months with the 105th Illinois Infantry volunteers, Company G and was discharged June 7, 1865. While in the army he campaigned with McClelland at Chattanooga, Lookout Mountain, and participated in the siege of Atlanta, Georgia. Afterward he marched with Sherman to the sea. He returned to Hampshire after the war and engaged in farming until March 1869. In the spring of 1869 George and another family set out with teams and loaded wagons headed for Greene County, Iowa, but were stopped by mud and flood waters about 3 miles east of Nevada. They decided to inquire if there might be land available nearby. The men mounted horses, swam the creek, and made their way to Nevada where they found a man who had land for sale in Sherman Township. A transaction was made whereby George bought one hundred twenty acres for $5.00 per acre. After digging a well and erecting a small house and barn, he rented out the farm and went to Chicago where he operated a horse drawn street car for a time while saving money to get a start in farming. In 1873 George returned to Iowa to live on his land and make it his permanent home. On October 3, 1878 he married Mary McArthur of Colo, Iowa. George and Mary had six children: Martha Lavina b. Aug 17, 1878, d. Nov 27, 1887 Asa Stephen May 18, 1881, d. Jun 16, 1963, m. Ella Wiltse Anna b. Aug 16, 1882, d. Dec 1967, m. James Harrison Ella b. Oct 7, 1883, d. Nov 6, 1901 Charles b. Jan 27, 1885, d. 1959, m. Goldie Johnson Irma b. Aug 10, 1888 d. Jul 21, 1948, m. William Tomas Rogers Mary Barnard died on February 28, 1900. In 1907 George moved into Zearing and rented the farm to his son Asa. The book "Community History Zearing Iowa" published in 1956 states that George was one of the leading citizens in the history of the community. George was very involved in the development of the community. He served as director of the Barnard School for several years and was active in the Masonic Lodge, the G.A.R., and served as mayor of Zearing for a time. However George often testified that the church had first place in his life. He was put his faith in Jesus Christ as his Lord and savior under the ministry of the Reverend W.J. Hahn in the Pleasant Vale school house and was active in the Evangelical Church in Zearing where he served as a steward and trustee. His home was always open to the men of God who ministered to the church. George Barnard spent the final years of his life living with a daughter in Marshalltown, Iowa where he died May 13, 1935 at the age of 90.
