Hardin's civil war record from the National Archives shows he enlisted in the CSA in the confederate Company K., Ninth Regiment Calvary, Kentucky Mounted Rifles on 01 Jul 1862, at Dunlap, Hamilton County, Tennessee. He surrendered on 22 May 1865, in Washington, DC. He gave his place of residence on some pay records as Henry County, Kentucky. He surrendered on 22 May 1865, in Washington, DC. He gave his place of residence on some pay records as Henry County, Kentucky. Alta McDonell Terry (granddaughter) recalls he was a tall man, about 6'1", with dark hair and grey eyes. He worked for the B&O Railroad and the Union Northwest Pacific Railroad as a foreman building tracks. This accounts for his moving from state to state after the civil war. It is believed that he moved to Montana after his first wife, Susan Catherine Eubank, died. He and the four (4) children made the trip from Lexington, Kentucky. He ran a saloon in Belgrade, Montana, for some length of time (date unknown). He married a second time to Mary Jane (Molly) Browning. It was believed that she was from Kentucky. He and Molly went back to Kentucky after his children were grown. She died in Kentucky in 1914. John wrote his daughter, Leah, and told her that Molly had died and no one was left in Kentucky. She told him to come back to Montana and live with them. He was crippled from some accident while working on the railroad. He walked with a cane. It was recalled that as an older man he was cantankerous with a hot temper. One night in March of 1919, they had a family dispute. John went outside on that cold night and stood by the well. The next day he had trouble with his chest and difficulty with breathing. It also says he died before the doctor could get there. He had suffered bronchial trouble and asthma for years. He was buried in Roberts, Montana. In a letter by Alta McDonell Terry (granddaughter), she stated "About two weeks or so before he died he went into his trunk and sorted through all his papers. He told Leah he was keeping all the Mason receipts, but threw away the Mason papers and kept rent receipts so there was nothing left. He wanted to be buried by the Masonic Lodge, it was very important to him. Time and again he would tell about how he was a 33rd degree Mason, often talking to his son-in-law, Daniel Rickards, about it. Information provided by Helen Conrad Watson, his great granddaughter.
