Hundreds of people in Henry county are filed with helpful and tender remembrances at the passing of John Wesley Hinkson, an honored veteran of the Civil war, the last member of the 4th Iowa cavalry, a staunch Christian man, a patriotic citizen, faithful to every duty of his life, an held in the highest regard by all who knew him, who died at the home of his son. Albert C. Hinkson, four miles eat of this city, on Sunday, December 28, 1924, which was the seventy-eighth anniversary of the birth of Iowa among the sisterhood of states, which make up the Union for which he fought. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. William Hinkson, who were very early settlers in Iowa, and was born on a farm site about forty miles northwest of Mr. Pleasant. January 31, 1839, while the state was still a territory and Mt. Pleasant a small, straggling settlement of a few houses on the unbroken prairie, with Indians and wild life in abundance. His childhood playmates were often the children of the Indians to whom he was ever a friend. He cultivated corn on the grounds now occupied by the state hospital. He helped dig the first grave in pleasant Hill cemetery. Forest Home cemetery was then virgin soil with no occupant. His father was among the early organizers of Pleasant Hill church., when it was a struggling society of Methodists, holding services in a log cabin. John Hiskson grew to manhood in this community. He was the last of his parents children, two sister preceded him in death. When the Civil war broke out he enlisted in C. D. 4th Iowa Cavalry, serving through the entire period of the war. He was a private in the ranks. lot Abraham and Major Spearman, both well known veterans, were his captain and major respectively. He was a great favorite among his comrades and did much to help them in hearing the burdens and hardships of army life. He was scribe for many boys and wrote letters for them to their friends and relatives back home. He was the best cook in the regiment. His coffee was famous for its Excellency. He was detailed for hospital services during the slege of Vicksburg and many of sick and dying comrades was made thankful by his kindly ministrations. He knew how to fit into every need whether fighting beside his comrades in the bloody fray, cheering those who were homesick and despondent, or shedding the geniality of his presence by the sick bed or at the camp fire. He was a member of McFarland Post. G. A. R. of Mt. Pleasant, where for many years he was a faithful and consistent worker for the good of the Post and the Preservation among all his fellow citizens. At his funeral two of his comrades, E. N. Kitchen and J. W. Smith were present and four ladies of the Relief Corps draped his countries flag over his flower laden casket. and formed a guard of honor as it was carried to the grave. John Hinkson represented, all that is best, highest and noblest in American life. February 5th 1867, he was united in marriage to Emily Cornick. His heart was made sad by her death twenty-seven years ago. Five children were born to gladden their home. They are Frank A. Hinkson, Enid, Oklahoma; Mrs. Florence E. Roberts, Mt, Pleasant, Iowa; Charles Edwin Hinkson, Little Rock, Arkansas; Albert C. Hinkson and Mrs. Laura E. Coe of near Mt.Pleasant.
