Jordan, son of William and Mary (McLeland) Jordan, was born in Perry township, Wayne county, Ind., on the farm now owned by Eldo Cain, July 2, 1815, and departed this life April 8th, 1904, aged 88 years, 9 months and 6 days. His early life was spent assisting his father on the farm. There were not many school privileges in those days, but by applying himself to study at home he was prepared to teach which vocation he followed for two years. His early life was spent assisting his father on the farm. There were not many school privileges in those days, but by applying himself to study at home he was prepared to teach which vocation he followed for two years. On Feb. 24, 1841, he was united in marriage to Catherine, daughter of William and Mary Davidson of Henry county, Ind. They commenced housekeeping on the farm now owned by W. D. Jordan, and in 1856 purchased the farm now owned by Charles Atkinson on which he spent the remainder of his life, except the last three years, which was spent in Economy. His companion preceded him to the Heavenly Home, having died September 10, 1895. To this union were born twelve children only seven of whom are living to mourn the loss of a dead father. John Jordan united with the M. E. church at old Asbury chapel which, when a new church was built, was called Mount Pleasant and remained a member as long as the society was kept at that place. He was a trustee during the whole of this time and a steward most of the time. The last five years of his life his membership was at Economy. He was faithful upon all the means of grace both public and private. His children ever remember the prayers that went up from the family alter. And now, until that day when we all shall hope to meet again in that Heavenly Home, we would say: "Farewell, dear father, sweet thy rest, Weary with years and worn with pain, Farewell, until in some happy place We shall behold thy face again. 'Tis ours to miss thee, all our years, And tender memories of thy keep. Thine in the Lord to rest, for so He giveth his beloved sleep." Contributor: Angels A-Far (47320339)
