Walter Kartchner. at Liberty Center, IA. He was suffering from pneumonia. Funeral services were held at the Cutter and Hartnett funeral home here Sunday with Russell G. Nye in charge. John Kartchner was one of a family of eight children. His father, John Kartchner, Sr., came to Jasper county with an indian guide in the pioneer days and staked claim north of Colfax. Mr. Kartchner was educated in the Plummer Grove county school and was a Jasper county farmer until his retirement several years ago. Immediate surviving relatives include son, Walter, a daughter, Marie Kartchner an instructor in the Monroe schools, a brother, Nathaniel Kartchner of near Colfax and one grandson. Kartchner, Pioneer of County Died on Friday His Father Came to Jasper County As An Indian Guide John W. Kartchner, 76, one of the pioneers of Jasper county, died at the home of his son at Liberty Center, Warren county, following a few days illness. The Kartchner family is one of the truly pioneer families of Jasper county, the father coming here as an Indian guide in an early day. Mr. Kartchner had been a resident here all his life until recently when he had gone to live with his son. He had visited in Colfax last week and his sudden death came unexpectedly. John Wesley, son of John C. and Nancy Ash Kartchner, was born in Poweshiek Township, Jasper county, Iowa, April 16, 1863. He died at the home of his son, Walter, at Liberty Center, Iowa, Friday, Mar. 1, 1940. Age: 76 years, 10 months and 15 days. His father came to Jasper county in an early day as an Indian guide and later settled and established a home in Poweshiek township. The Kartchners were one of the pioneer families of Jasper county. He attended Plummer Grove school, which is one of the oldest schools of the county, and grew to young manhood in that vicinity. He was one of a family of 8 children. Six brothers and sisters, William, Frank, Christopher, Suzanne, Dianna and Elizabeth have preceded him in death. One brother, Nathaniel of Colfax, survives. He was united in marriage to Miss Sarah Arlepha Woodbury, on March 6, 1900 in Newton, Iowa. Mrs. Kartchner preceded him in death a number of years ago. Among the survivors are one son, Walter of Liberty Center, Iowa; one daughter, Marie, who is a teacher in the public schools of Monroe; one grandson, Jerry Kartchner, other relatives and friends. Funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon from the Cutter-Hartnett Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Russell G. Nye officiating. Music was furnished by John A. Davis with Miss Eleanor Howell accompanist. Pall bearers were: Roy and Russell Baker, Sam Sage, Harry Baker, and Artie Bell. Burial was in the McKeever cemetery.
