John Wesley McVey was born in Leesburg, Ohio, December 19, 1825, died in Sand Spring, Iowa, May 4, 1913, aged 87 years, 4 months and 15 days. He was married in Ohio to Miss Sarah Sexton. They had four children, all of whom have preceded him to the better land. Mrs. McVey died in October 1882. Mr. McVey first came to this country in 1850, but returned to Ohio. In 1860 he came here and has since been a resident of this vicinity and place about 51 years. In 1884 he was married to Mary Appleby from near Colesburg. Four children were born to them, who with his wife survive him. The children are: John [Cleveland], Raymond, James and Rose, all of this place and vicinity. Also, he is survived by 13 grandchildren and several great grandchildren. He came here when the country was new, and had experienced all the changes incident to a new country. He was very well known all around here and was generally respected. He has been in feeble health for a number of years. He was brought up in the Methodist faith as his name would indicate; and it was his special wish that his funeral services should be held from that church. The services were held at the Methodist Church at Sand Spring, Tuesday afternoon, May 6, Rev. G.J.Chalice of Hopkinton, officiating. The singers were from Sand Spring; and internment was there, beside his first wife as he wished to be. Thus passed another of the aged ones, of whom there are so few left.The relatives from a distance who attended the funeral were Mrs. Cora Meythaler of Jesup, who is his oldest grandchild; relatives from Greeley, Mrs. and Mrs. Harrison Appleby from west of Hopkinton, and Mr. and Mrs. Joe Appleby of Castle Grove."
