Death came quietly for the pioneer citizen at the home of his son, Clyde, on Route 81 near Lafayette. He had been confined to his bed off and on since suffering a stroke of paralysis last year - shortly before he attained the century mark in life. Despite his advanced age, Mr. Hanthorn liked to keep as active as possible. He was an ardent fisherman, the sport for which he achieved wide fame. When he celebrated his 101st birthday last June, he was the central figure of a family reunion. Born in Perry-tp, June 16, 1850, he always had lived in the vicinity. He was a son of Milton and Elizabeth Morrison Hanthorn, who settled in Allen-co in 1832, when there were only three houses in what is now the city of Lima. As a lad of 15, Mr. Hanthorn tried to enlist in the Union army during the last stages of the Civil war, but his father refused permission. Mr. Hanthorn often attributed his long life to a consistent program of hard work. Among his earliest pursuits was hauling hay into Lima for sale on the Public-sq when the city's business center was "nothing but a sea of mud." When the oil boom started in the '70s, he gave up farming for several years and became a teamster for one of the oil companies. The Little Manhattan refinery, which operated on Bellefontaine-rd, was on land that Hanthorn owned. Next to fishing, his favorite recreation was attending circuses, and for well over three-quarters of a century he seldom missed a performance when the "Big Top" came to Lima. He was one of the most active members of the Lima Borrowed Time club since its inception more than 20 years ago. He was also a member of the Perry Union Methodist church. He was married to the former Nancy Goldsmith at the latter's home near Westminster May 7, 1874. The couple marked their 67th wedding anniversary a few months before Mrs. Hanthorn died in 1942. Since that time, Mr. Hanthorn had made his home with his son, Clyde. Other survivors are two daughters, Mrs. William Gottfried, 311 1/2 N. Elizabeth-st, and Mrs. Charles Bell, Route 6; 17 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren and 9 great-great-grandchildren. Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Sowards funeral home. The Rev. Willard Thomas will officiate. Burial will be in Memorial Park cemetery. (published in The Lima News, Sunday, October 21, 1951)
