Description	:	Jim Wood wrote that John Whitt Nowlin lived his adult life in Franklin County, buying his first tract of land on Shooting Creek in Franklin County in 1799. It is believed that John came from Halifax County, VA. John owned a lot of land between Shooting Creek and Charity. He was a hard working man who owned many slaves. Read More	Jim Wood wrote that John Whitt Nowlin lived his adult life in Franklin County, buying his first tract of land on Shooting Creek in Franklin County in 1799. It is believed that John came from Halifax County, VA. John owned a lot of land between Shooting Creek and Charity. He was a hard working man who owned many slaves. He accumulated quite a sum of money – mostly in silver coin – enough to make a long bar of silver bullion when his dwelling caught fire and burned down. He was on his way home one dark night when a bobcat got after him. He made it to the log meeting house in Charity where the Primitive Baptist Church now stands. As he closed the door, he heard the bobcat screaming and scratching at the door. After spending the night in the church, he returned to his family the next day. He was a person of cheerful disposition and would sing amusing songs, even when he was laid up in bed as a result of a broken thigh, which finally resulted in his death. Polly, known as Granny Nowlin, was one of the most strong-minded women of her day, surviving her husband by many years. She refused to go and live with her sons insisting instead to remain in her old log-bodied house in her old neighborhood with some of her old slaves. There she lived until she became helpless, could keep house no longer, and was forced to move in with one of her sons. The years of her widowhood were years of decrepitude, yet she bore the ills common to old age without complaining. She is buried with her husband near her home in the old Rakes Cemetery on Popular Camp Creek in view of the fields where she often played as a child. In O.E. Pilson’s book, Tombstone Inscriptions of the Cemeteries of Patrick County, Virginia, on page 242, cemetery 545, Old Rakes Cemetery, it lists two grave markers as M.N. and J.N. These two markers were the old ones. They have since been replaced with a new one for John Whitt and Mary “Polly” Thomas Nowlin. The old ones are laying next to the new marker.∼Son of James Nowlin and Ursula Patterson.
