Description	:	John W Burke, age 89, formerly of Newark, DE passed away on Wednesday, December 21, 2011. Mr. Burke was preceded in death by his wife, Bertha H. Burke in 2007 with whom he enjoyed 61 years of marriage. He was born in Marathon, Iowa, to William A. and Ida Marie Burke. John attended Fort Dodge High School and soon after graduation moved to Delaware. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corp at age 18, and served in the South Pacific Theater of Operations during World War II, and served overseas for 32 months with the Fifth Regiment of the First... Read More	John W Burke, age 89, formerly of Newark, DE passed away on Wednesday, December 21, 2011. Mr. Burke was preceded in death by his wife, Bertha H. Burke in 2007 with whom he enjoyed 61 years of marriage. He was born in Marathon, Iowa, to William A. and Ida Marie Burke. John attended Fort Dodge High School and soon after graduation moved to Delaware. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corp at age 18, and served in the South Pacific Theater of Operations during World War II, and served overseas for 32 months with the Fifth Regiment of the First Marine Division. John was in three campaigns beginning with Guadalcanal (Solomon Islands); Cape Gloucester and Talasea on New Britain Island; also in combat at Peleliu in the Palau Islands. He returned to the states just before the Okinawa Campaign and was stationed at the Marine Barracks U.S. Naval Operating Base in Norfolk, VA and honorably discharged as a Corporal on February 8, 1946. He enlisted in the U.S. Naval Reserves for five years. John enjoyed fishing, crabbing, gardening and walking at the Christiana Mall. He was a member of Richardson Park Methodist Church, a life member of VFW 2863, Guadalcanal Campaign Veterans, and First Marine Division Assn. He worked as a printing pressman with Mercantile Press for seven years, and was a member of Ironworkers Local 451 for 50 years. John is survived by his daughters, Marie E. Goodman and Sharon L. Smerdon; and 3 grandsons: Michael and Brian Goodman, and Allan Smerdon. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Edwin A. Burke; and sisters, Helen Patterson and Ethel Hartquist. A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, December 29, 2011 at Delaware Veterans Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear, DE 19701 at 11am.
