Description	:	John William Benson November 8, 1927 - April 30, 2009 Longtime Grand Junction resident, John William Benson passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, April 30, 2009 at St. Mary's Hospital. He was 81. He was born in Gothenburg, NE on November 8, 1927 to Hugh and Helen Benson. His family moved to Olathe, CO and farmed the property until the beginning of World War II. Read More	John William Benson November 8, 1927 - April 30, 2009 Longtime Grand Junction resident, John William Benson passed away unexpectedly on Thursday, April 30, 2009 at St. Mary's Hospital. He was 81. He was born in Gothenburg, NE on November 8, 1927 to Hugh and Helen Benson. His family moved to Olathe, CO and farmed the property until the beginning of World War II. John and his family moved to California to work in the war industries. At 17, John joined the Merchant Marines, serving in WWII. He returned to Grand Junction and married Verla Hadden. He went to work for the Rio Grande Railroad as a Switchman in 1952, and retired as a Brakeman in 1994. John couldn't stand retirement and worked with his son, Gene in the wholesale car business until his untimely death. John is survived by three daughters and a son who loved him very much. They are daughters, Helen (Steve) McKinely of Grand Junction; Linda Davenport of Phoenix, AZ; Patti (Steve) Eddy of Arvada, CO, and son, Gene W. of Grand Junction. John also has one surviving sister, Betty Maynes of Grand Junction; seven grandchildren, Greg, Guy, Jim, Johna, Debi, Tabor and Heidi; and seven great grandchildren, Josh, Kaleb, Aaron, Zak, Jeremiah, MacKenzie and Cooper. His loving parents, Hugh and Helen Benson and sister, Marjorie Moore preceded him in death. A military graveside service will be conducted at Memorial Gardens Cemetery on Tuesday, May 5, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. A celebration of his wonderful life will follow the burial at 2695 Continental Drive. We would like to thank his loving friends, Jean and Bob, for the many years of love support. We are going to miss you so much, Daddy.
