Description	:	John William (Bill) Dantzler, DVM, died on March 26, 2012 in his home at The Oaks, Orangeburg, SC. Visitation will be held Wednesday evening at Dukes-Harley Funeral Home from 6 to 8 PM. Funeral services will be 3:00 PM on Thursday, March 29, at St. Andrews United Methodist Church in Orangeburg. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. Dr. Dantzler was born on August 3, 1923, in Eutawville, SC, to the late Leroy Adair Dantzler and Inez Westbury Dantzler. He was educated in the Eutawville Public Schools and graduated from high school as the only boy in the class of 1940. Bill entered Clemson Agricultural and Mechanical College with the class of 1944, however, his education was interrupted by service in the Army in the European Theater during World War II. He returned to Clemson and completed his B.S. degree which was conferred in 1947. He earned a DVM from Alabama Polytechnic Institute (Auburn University) in 1951. Dr. Dantzler practiced veterinary medicine in Orangeburg from 1951 to 2000, tending both farm and companion animals as a general practitioner. The South Carolina Veterinary Medical Association honored him as veterinarian of the year in 1974. Dr. Dantzler served as city health officer for the City of Orangeburg from 1953 to 1978. He instituted restaurant inspection program and a meat inspection program which later became a model for the state. He served on the South Carolina State Board of Health. Dr. Dantzler was a charter member of St. Andrews United Methodist Church where he served on the Board of Trustees for many years and was a Sunday School teacher. He was a member of the Orangeburg Rotary Club and a Paul Harris Fellow. Bill was predeceased by his wife, Idonia Whittle Dantzler, his brother, Leroy Adair (Laddie) Dantzler, his sister, Inez Dantzler Covington and his daughter, Alice Idonia Dantzler. He is survived by his wife Marcia Reynolds Dantzler, his children Sharon Dantzler (Tom Gillette), John William Dantzler, Jr. (Kathi), Ira Mueller (Bruce), and his step children, Karen Williams (Charles), Charlene Scott (Gary) and Jayme Smith (Peter). He is also survived by thirteen Grandchildren: Marion Scalise (Matt), Ashley Stevenson (Gary), Charlie Williams (Blake), David Williams (Ginny), J. J. Scott, Bill Scott, Austin Smith, Eleanor Gillette, Kassie Dantzler, John Dantzler, Bryce Mueller and Adair Mueller. His seven Great Grandchildren are Matthew and Margaret Scalise, Will and Mary Ashley Groot. Cholly and Marshall Williams and a Great Grandson to arrive any day. The Family would like to honor Esau Isaac for his dedicated care and long-time friendship.
