Description	:	Son of William Ray and Effie (Lofstredt) Catlin, grew up in Oelwein and graduated from Oelwein high school in 1934 and later attended Iowa State University and army finance schooling in Baltimore, Maryland. John enlisted for military duty in November 1940 at Fort Des Moines, Iowa and then would later join the First Special Service Force serving in Italy and France. After the First Special Service Force disbanded he transferred to the 474th Infantry and served in Norway. John was honorably discharged in November 1945. He would later re-enlist for military service in Denver, CO in September 1955.... John was predeceased by his parents and sister Miriam. He is survived by his sister Adelle and other extended family and special friends. In 1984, Iowa Governor Terry Branstad proclaimed June 4th 1984 as First Special Service Force Day in Iowa, to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the liberation of Rome by the First Special Service Force and Governor Branstad signed a proclamation honoring 18 Iowans who were part of this elite unit that freed Rome from German forces. In July 2013, the Congressional Gold Medal was awarded, collectively, to the First Special Service Force, in recognition of its superior service during World War II.
