John and Susan established their residence in Eutawville, proudly becoming the fifth generation to reside in the 19th century family home, built on property originally deeded to Edwin Dantzler in 1890.... John was born June 30, 1955 to the late Mary Lucia Dantzler Hanes and Clyde Walton Hanes Sr. of Holly Hill, SC. It was there that he met his beloved wife of forty years, Susan Harris Hanes. John and Susan established their residence in Eutawville, proudly becoming the fifth generation to reside in the 19th century family home, built on property originally deeded to Edwin Dantzler in 1890. John was passionate about the heritage of the “homeplace” and surrounding land of his ancestors, doing all he could to maintain and preserve the property that was in his care. He is remembered by his family for his concern, compassion, generosity and no doubt, his unique sense of humor. John was an extraordinary man in many ways. He was, it seemed, born to be a salesman, with a personality that endeared him to customers throughout his career. He was an excellent cook, taking pleasure in sharing meals with others. It was, for him, an opportunity to fellowship with friends. John always planted a garden for his family, but he loved to gift others with the foods he grew. He never complained about his illnesses. Rather, he would say, “I’ll be okay.” His concern was for anyone in need, and he never put himself before others. John never met a stranger. Following in the steps of his father, John was a Mason and a member of Vance Masonic Lodge #230. Masonic Funeral Rites will be administered at graveside. The family will be at 1308 Peake Street, Holly Hill, during the weekend. The funeral service will be at Holly Hill United Methodist Church at 11:00 a.m. Saturday April 16, followed by interment at Holly Hill Cemetery, where the family will receive also friends.
