Description	:	John William Ingersoll, 86, of Waverly, Iowa, died on Saturday morning, January 28, 2012, at the Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community of GBM brain cancer. John was born on May 4, 1925, in Waverly, Iowa, the son of Floyd Elmer and Ellen Frances (Gill) Ingersoll. John was baptized at St. Mary's Catholic Church and confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, both in Waverly. John was born on May 4, 1925, in Waverly, Iowa, the son of Floyd Elmer and Ellen Frances (Gill) Ingersoll. John was baptized at St. Mary's Catholic Church and confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, both in Waverly. He attended 1st and 2nd grades at Irving Elementary, 3rd thru 8th at St. Paul's Parochial School and attended high school in Waverly. John entered the U.S. Navy on May 6, 1942. He served in both the Atlantic and Pacific during WWII. His final assignment in Underwater Demolition. Following his discharge, he moved to Louisiana before returning to Waverly. John worked for Roy's Place where he helped create the signature "Egg Cheese" Sandwich. He then worked for the West Side Market before farming with Art Niewohner near Sumner, Iowa. He then farmed for Loren Krueger north of Waverly. In May of 1948, he went to work in the foundry of John Deere in Waterloo. On August 23, 1948, he was united in marriage to Wilma Dettmer at Peace United Church of Christ in Waverly. John returned to the West Side Market, then Crystal Ice Plumbing & Heating, Bergan Lumber Company, and the Marshall Canning Factory both in the factory and then as a semi-driver for the company until the plant closed in 1958. John then drove semi-truck for Clarence Platte in Denver until June of 1963, when he became a Fireman for the Waverly Fire Department. He spent 6 years as a driver and 17 years as Chief. He retired on June 6, 1986. John was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ – Siegel. He was a member of the Waverly Amvets Post #79, American Legion Post #176 and V.F.W. Post #2208. John was also a member of the Iowa Fireman Association, Professional Fire Chief's Association, and was a charter member of the Greater Waverly Kiwanis Club. He loved to camp, travel and fish (John catching the fish and Wilma cleaning them, otherwise catch and release). He and Wilma camped at Frenchmen's Landing, later moving to Big River Campground in Prairie du Chien to be near family. Special times were taking grandsons, Chris and Matt fishing as well as great-grandson, Max. He also enjoyed playing with and holding great-grandson, John. John is survived by his loving wife of over 63 years; Wilma Ingersoll of Waverly; his children and their spouses, Sandra Miller of Hopkins, Minnesota, Richard (Dick) Ingersoll and wife, Cheryl of Cedar Falls, Susan Aswegan and husband, Ronald of Waverly; two grandsons and their wives, Chris and Jennifer Aswegan and great- grandson, Johnathan James (John) of Lisbon, and Matt and Amanda Aswegan and great- grandson, Maxwell John (Max) of Altoona. John is also survived by two sisters, Bernadine Abel of Vestal, New York, and Mary Brown of St. Louis, Missouri; and a sister-in-law, Virginia (Babe) Ingersoll of Kensett, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his father, Floyd E. Ingersoll, mother, Ellen (Ingersoll) Barr, step-father Lloyd Barr, brothers, Floyd and Gerald Ingersoll, and two brothers-in-law, Robin Abel and Charles Brown. Celebration of Life Services will be held on Wednesday, February 1, 2012, at 10:30 a.m. at St. John's United Church of Christ-Siegel, 1529 Killdeer Avenue, rural Waverly, with Pastors Eugene Walther and Bill Carpenter officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery with Military Graveside Rites conducted by the Amvets Post #79 of Waverly. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to St. Paul's Lutheran Church School, Cedar Valley Hospice, or W.A.V.P. (Waverly Area Veteran's Post).
