Description	:	Funeral services for John William Johnston were held Sunday, April 15 at 2:00 p.m. at Grace Methodist Church with the Rev. W. W. Bentzinger pastor of the church officiating. Organ music by Mrs. Coe Manatt. Burial was in the I.O.O.F. cemetery. Mr. Johnston became seriously ill last Monday night and was taken to the hospital, but in spite of all that could be done for him, he grew steadily worse until death brought release. John William, son of James J. and Dorcus Baird Johnston was born in Poweshiek County, Iowa on May 7, 1880. He passed away at Grinnell, Iowa on Friday morning, April 14 at the age of 63 years, 11 months and 7 days. Mr. Johnston spent all his life in Poweshiek county. He grew to manhood on the farm south of Brooklyn. On Jan. 1, 1901 he married Miss Chrissie Kuntz at the home of her parents. It was there, that they established their home and maintained it for 40 years until they moved to Brooklyn a little over two years ago. Three children were born, all of whom with their mother survive. They are: Florence Armstrong, Everett and Mrs. Fern Graham, all of Brooklyn and vicinity. Also two sisters: Mrs. Margaret Morrison of Cedar Rapids and Mrs. Fred Frease of Montezuma. One sister, Mrs. Fannie Sanders, and one brother Robert S. Johnston preceded him in death. In addition to his wife and children and sisters, Mr. Johnston is survived by 8 grandchildren, many other relatives and a host of friends. When a young man, he united with the Fairmount Methodist church. In April 1939 he transferred his membership to Grace Methodist church in Brooklyn. He was a member of the Knights of Pythias and Pythian Sisters, who attended services in a body. The Knights of Pythias conducted their ritual at the grave. Source: Poweshiek Obituaries
