Read More	Carroll Daily Herald - June 26, 1937 (Saturday) John W. Schleisman of Lake City, Iowa, a veteran of the World WarI, died suddenly at the Veterans hospital in Des Moines. He had been ill health for the last four years. On Monday, June 14, Mr. Schleisman underwent a major operation at the hospital in Des Moines, from which he was apparently making a good recovery. Wednesday, his wife and mother, Mrs. Margaret Schleisman, Henry Borcherding and Mrs. Kenneth Best of Lidderdale visited him at the hospital. He was doing nicely at that time. A card which he had written home arrived Friday just before the death message was received. The body will be shipped from Des Moines and will be taken to the home of his mother at Lidderdale Sunday. FUNERAL WEDNESDAY. Funeral services will be held Wednesday morning at St. Mary's church, Lake City and burial will be beside his father in the family lot in Holy Family cemetery at Lidderdale. He will be vuried with military honors. Mr. Schleisman was 44 years old. he was born at Kentner, Iowa, Dec. 12, 1893, a son of the Adam and Margaret Schleisman. he was six years old when the family moved to a farm northwest of Lidderdale, where they lived until 1916, when they moved to the town of Lidderdale. He received his education in the parochial schools of Carroll. AMONG THE FIRST TO ENLIST. Mr. Schleisman was among the first boys of Carroll county to enter the World WarI. He left home in Feb. 1917, going to Camp Dodge, from which place he was sent to Houston, Tex. for a short time before going overseas. He was a member of Company I, 33rd Division, 131 Infantry. He made an honorable record in his 15 months' service overseas, during which time he fought at the front. He was wounded in battle and was in a hospital for some time. Several medals (Purple Heart) were awarded to Mr. Schleisman for distinctive service and two of them were received by him at the hospital just a few days before he passed away. MARRIED IN 1927 Mr. Schleisman was married in Feb. 23,1927, at Lidderdale to Miss May Borcherding of Lidderdale. They farmed near Lidderdale before moving to a farm near Lake City, where they lived for three years. Because of Mr. Schleisman's ill health, he discontinued farming this spring and the family moved to Lake City March 1. SURVIVORS. Surviving are his wife and five children: Colleen, 9; Daryl, 7; Roland, 6; Jackie, 5; and Duane, 3; his mother, Mrs. Margaret Schleisman, of Lidderdale, and a brother, Elmer Schleisman of Lidderdale. His father passed away April 26,1925. He was also preceded indeath by a sister and brother, both of whom passed away in infancy. Mr. Schleisman was a devout member of St. Mary's church of Lake City. He was active member of the Lake City post, Veterans of Foreign Wars. A baseball enthusiast, he was well known in this field of sport throughout Carroll county. He had played as first baseman with the Lidderdale team for many years, and for one or two seasons he was a member of the Carroll team. Mr. Schleisman was scouted by major league baseball teams.
