He was reared in his native State and when a young man his parents settled in Rush County, Ind. March 16, 1840, he was married in Rush County to Miss Barbara Hilligoss. To them were born ten children, of whom only four are now living--William M., Jacob, Sarah and Indiana. To them were born ten children, of whom only four are now living--William M., Jacob, Sarah and Indiana. Mr. Shockley settled in Union Township, on the farm where his widow still resides, in 1855. His tragic death which occurred in July, 1878, is still fresh in the minds of our citizens. His death was caused by an [steam powered farm tractor] explosion, while he was engaged in threshing grain in Eel River Township, this county. Mrs. Shockley is the owner of forty acres of land. Ind, July 17, [1878] A threshing machine boiler exploded today about 10:30 o’clock, on the farm of John Shockley. about three miles north of Lizton, killing John Shockley, M P Johnson, John Klonhantz and John Jones, instantly and badly scalded, and wounded Henry Ashley, Thomas Smith, and slightly scalding Alfred Shockley and Alexander Humphrey. It is thought that the injuries of Ashley and Smith will prove fatal. The force of the explosion was terrific, scattering fragments of the boiler, bolts and iron in every direction. The trucks on which it rested were torn off and twisted out of all shape. A large piece of the boiler was carried clear above the treetops and nearly a quarter of a mile from the machine. Two or three [horse] teams hauling wheat to the machine ran away simultaneously, but owing to the havoc of the explosion, little attention was paid to them. John Shockley, on whose farm the accent occurred, was about fifty-eight and a well-to-do farmer. His head was completely crushed. John Jones was unmarried and a quite influential young man. His head was also crushed. M.P. Jones resided at Lebanon, and was the engineer. One of his arms was cut from his body as if by cleaver, and his side was crushed. He was married, and leaves a family. Henry Ashley, who is believed to be fatally hurt, is twenty-one years old, a school teacher, and an exemplary young man. John Smith who was hauling water to the machine, was near the boiler, and was badly scalded. He was found letting the water run out of the box over his body until it gave out, when he jumped into another box filled with water. He is believed to be fatally scalded. An engineer examined the wreck and found that the check-valve, that that leads from the tank to the boiler, was nearly closed up by lime forming the opening to the boiler. The opening was not larger that a ‘rye straw’ [organic drinking straw] and he said that if the pump stopped for a short time, an explosion was bound to occur. John was said to be have been a good engineer, but the defect was discovered too late.
