Read More	WESTFIELD, NC ~ Mr. John William Sutphin, 89, of Westfield passed from this world into the arms of our loving Savior on Friday, July 1, 2005. He was born in the Flat Rock community on Oct. 6, 1915, to George Lee and Sarah Elsie Hicks Sutphin. He received Christ as his personal Savior in 1963 and was a faithful member of Westfield Baptist Church, where he served his Lord as usher along with performing other duties as needed. Until his recent illness, John served as a role model for the church's younger members by seldom missing a Sunday service. Not only was he a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle, but he faithfully practiced our Lord's commandment to "love one another" in everything that he did. John enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1935 and served his country for 30 years. He was a veteran of combat in Germany during World War II, where he survived several months as a POW. He again entered into combat during the Korean conflict, serving with ground forces for a year. During times of peace, he served in Panama, Mich., and at Wofford College in Spartanburg, S.C., where he instructed ROTC and served as his unit's administrative chief until his retirement in 1965. After retiring from the military, John moved his family to Westfield. He worked for 12 years at United Technologies in Mount Airy before again retiring in 1977. During his retirement, John and his loving wife, Mearle, visited all 50 states. John also loved to garden and took pride in his beautiful yard. Loved ones who departed this life before him include his parents; three sisters, Maggie Hiatt, Bessie Short, and Frances McCadams; and four brothers, Woodrow Sutphin, Jack Sutphin, George Abner "Abb" Sutphin and Donald Sutphin. He leaves behind his loving wife of 62 years, Mearle Jolly Sutphin; a daughter and son-in-law, Rebecca and Charles Siau of Greenville, S.C.; a son and daughter-in-law, Phil and Kathy Sutphin of Westfield; five grandchildren, Wesley Siau, Paul Siau, Dawn Gwinn, Jonathan Sutphin and Sarah Sutphin; a great-grandchild, Rebecca Whitmire; four sisters, Lois Short, Savannah Midkiff, Betty Key, and Clarice Hall; and a brother, Joe Dean Sutphin. He is also remembered by many loving in-laws, nieces and nephews. The funeral for Mr. Sutphin will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday, July 4, at Westfield Baptist Church, with burial following in the church cemetery. Military rites will be performed by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Memorial Honor Guard Post 2019 of Mount Airy and Post 9436 of Pilot Mountain. His earthly body will lie in state 30 minutes before the service and the family will receive friends after the service in the church fellowship hall. At other times, the family will receive friends at the home of his son, Phil Sutphin. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Westfield Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, c/o John Kuhl, 3230 Old Westfield Road, Pilot Mountain, NC 27041. The family wishes to express their deep appreciation for the loving care given by the medical professionals who cared for John during his illness: Northern Hospice, and the employees of Senior Quality Care Inc. who so lovingly made John's final moments on this earth as comfortable as possible.
