Description	:	John Will Lawson, 83, retired farmer of Route 1 Mayodan was struck down by a car on the Ayersville road at 9:00 p.m. Sunday as he was making his way home from a visit with a neighbor, Patrolman Leonard Cheek, who was investigating, said that no charges were made against Norman Alton Vaden, 34, of route 1 Mayodan, who was driving the northbound car which struck Lawson. He said it appeared that Lawson stepped into the path of the Vaden car. He said Vaden swerved left to miss the man but that the right front of his car caught him.... His car traveled 238 feet before it came to rest in the right lane, after the headlights were knocked out by the impact. Rockingham County Coroner, Dr. Robert Baisley, held an inquest here and the accident was termed unavoidable. Funeral services for Mr. Lawson were held at the Sardis Primitive Baptist Church near Madison at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday with Rev. Paul L. Tice and Elder Ed Easter, both of Winston-Salem, Rev. Preston Grubbs of Walkertown and Elder Mannie Stevens of Danbury officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Lawson was a native of Stokes County, a retired farmer, and son of Bradley and Jane Mabe Lawson. Surviving are his wife Betty Ann Shelton Lawson; one daughter, Mrs. Lou Ella Gann, route 2 Madison; four sons, Johnny Lawson of route 5 Reidsville, C.N. Lawson of route 4 Reidsville, Leonard Paul Lawson of Reidsville and William Walter Lawson of route 1 Stoneville; 25 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; 3 stepdaughters, Mrs. Carey Bullins of route 2 Walnut Cove, Mrs. Pencie Bullins of route 2 Walnut Cove and Mrs. Betty Manuel of route 1 Mayodan; 3 stepsons, Emory Shelton of route 2 Walnut Cove, Lemmie and Frank Shelton both of the home. Printed in one of the local papers in 1963 found in the scrapebook of my grandmother (his daughter-in-law)
